Rambling...

I'm going to ramble for now. Not one specific topic. Lots of topics, in fact.

1. Chicago Bears. Ok--What in the hellworld happened tonight? The defense couldn't plug a whole the size of Illinois, the offense was spinning their wheels, and the QB was COLOR BLIND!!!!!! (Note: ONLY Bears fans may comment. Those other people--don't want to hear it.)

2. December. Can you believe there are only 31 days left in 2008? It seems as if it was just yesterday that I was at home celebrating the new year. Looking back, I've been a lot of places and done a lot of activities...and run from a hurricane! I'll have to start documenting for a year-in-review post. Won't that be exciting....ha ha ha.

3. iTunes/Apple.com. Last night, I had a problem syncing my phone and my computer. I had purchased some music usin the wi-fi feature on my phone. When I went to sync my phone, the music disappeared. I looked up information on the web and pretty much came to the conclusion I was out the 8+ dollars I spent on the music. However, I contacted iTunes/Apple.com and waited. I received an email saying I should hear from someone within 24 hours. I really didn't expect to hear from anyone...especially since it was a Sunday. Lo-and-behold, I WAS WRONG!!!! Not only did I get a response, but the person was quite friendly and helpful. I learned that there is one little problem when using the wi-fi feature...but it is easily correctable. They also let me download the said songs again...free of charge. I WAS SHOCKED!!!! Because they were so kind and helpful, I felt the world should know!!! What great customer relations!!!!!!

4. Weather. This crazy weather...one day the high is 84 and the next it is 64. This wouldn't be that big of a deal, but the difference each day is upwards of 40 degrees. THAT IS HUGE!!!!!!! It's no wonder everyone is getting sick. How do you dress for the day??? It's cold when you leave the house, but boiling when you leave work. UGH!!!!

5. Visitors. I noticed that I am nearing in on visitor number 500. I wonder who it will be. I don't think I will offer a prize to visitor number 500, but I'd really like to know who it is. So, if you log on to read and find you are visitor number 500, PLEASE let me know. (I know a certain person who sometimes pops in and WILL NEVER let me know he/she was here. I will know though.)

6. 11 days. This is how many school days are left with my student teacher.

7. Christmas cards. I'm not sending them out this year. Instead, I have something else I'm going to do. So--I gotta do them!!!!! Right now. That is what I should be doing. So I will.

Sweet Dreams and Happy Days to you all!

Twilight...part II

Well, I finished the book. I was so busy reading, I didn't update the blog. Sorry....It was a good book, and I can't wait to start on the next book in the series...New Moon. That Girl--I don't think it would be good for J, but you might want to read it or call me. Hope everyone is having a great break and doing the holiday shopping early. I'm almost finished! YAHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to all of those who are conspiring with me...Isn't it fun??????

Happy Day!

There ought to be a law....

I've decided that there ought to be a law about certain things. So, I'm sharing them with you.

1. There ought to be a law saying you can NOT skip Thanksgiving. You can NOT go from Halloween to Christmas without recognizing Thanksgiving.
2. There ought to be a law against Christmas decorations BEFORE Thanksgiving. I have already seen MANY houses decorated for Christmas.
3. There ought to be a law against people talking NONSTOP about a book you are reading.
4. There ought to be a law against having to pay for your luggage on a flight.
5. There ought to be a law that cell phones don't lose their signals when you aren't moving.

Well, that is all for now. I'm sure I'll think of more later.

Any of you have ideas??????

Weekend...

OH WOW...Where do I begin? I don't know if I can remember what has happened since I last posted. I do know that I have been sleep deprived, and it's pretty difficult to get back on track.

Friday...Lock-In. We had a blast. B and I had planned a number of activities, and didn't get to do all of them. We started the evening with the "eating gross food" part. We figured we'd make them sick, let them run around in the gym and then feed them pizza...less yucky food to clean up if they puked during the food part. We guessed correctly. We made it a little worse by blindfolding them before taking them into the room. The first food was turkey, rice and garden vegetable baby food slug guts. One of the girls ate ALL of it. (NOTE: I tried this earlier in the evening. Other than being VERY bland, it was NOT that bad. Yeah, it smelled gross, but it wasn't horrible.) Then came the hard-boiled egg stuffed with whipped cream cheese with a pimento stuffed green olive and red food coloring to make it look bloodshot strained eyeballs. Most of them tried this without fussing. The next three items went down well--no complaints from the group. We had green colored chez whiz on pretzel rods boogers on a stick, chocolate chip with coconut cookies in grape nut cereal cat poop and lemonade, sprite, and rainbow sherbet day old bath water.

After this, we played dodgeball and ordered pizza. While waiting for the pizza, we went into our big gym--which all the lights were out in. We left one door open so the hall lights would give them some light. B and I worked out a plan to scare the girls. When I counted to three, she slammed the only open door, and I turned out the hall lights. The girls screamed and screamed. I thought it would be funny to put down the gate between the cafeteria and gyms and hide from them. The joke was on me! We asked J, the first-year teacher I am mentoring to come scare the girls. He agreed, and we had a plan. However, he came in the wrong door...and scared ME! It was funny. The pizza arrived, and he gave us about 20 minutes to enjoy it before came over the intercom telling the girls to get out. They chased him, and us, around for about an hour. We then did relay races, a photo scavenger hunt and another food contest. This time, they had to eat more baby food--love the cheap, gross stuff!!--eat 5 large marshmellows, and drink a sippy cup full of apple juice and water. The one to complete it the fastest won.

About 3:30, 4 of the girls couldn't hang anymore and went to sleep. The rest of us played murder in the dark. It was a fun, appropriate game--even if the name does not suggest it. At 5:00, two of the girls went with me to get donuts and kolaches from a nearby donut shop. YUM!!!! They were super fresh! At 6:00, B and I couldn't hang any more. I had been up 25 hours at this point. We all were up at 8:30 to clean and go home. I slept about an hour after I got home before I went to have lunch with J, our AP. She loaned me her keys, and I had to return them.

I crashed about 7 pm Saturday night in the recliner and slept until 8am. I took a nap from 11:45-3:45, and I've been ready for bed since 5:30. Forced myself to stay up so I could sleep tonight. The only good thing about this is even though I have to be at work, I don't have to teach as my student teacher will be doing that for the two days before we get out for Thanksgiving. YEAH for student teachers.

I did manage to get caught up on the TV programs I taped from this week. Ready for the week, TV-wise!

Jazz Extravaganza

Tonight I attended a Jazz Extravaganza at the local junior college. Two junior high schools, 2 high schools and the college jazz bands performed with professionals from Houston. The professionals held a clinic this afternoon with the individual bands, and then the performance was tonight.

These pro's have an amazing list of accomplishments--from performing at President George H. W. Bush's inaguaral ball to touring with Frankie Valli and performing with Winston Marsalis. And, our kids got to learn from them and perform with them! It was very exciting.

All of the groups did exceptional jobs. I'm so proud of our kiddos.

New Holiday???

Yes, I know I have posted three times now in less than 4 hours. Yes, I know I should be in bed sleeping. But....

I recorded a favorite show and just had to watch it. And, I wasn't tired. And, I was updating my music selections on my computer. (It's STILL updating....I have 577 songs for 1.5 days time and still going.....)

Back to the topic....or as we teach the kids...Stick to the Topic! As I was watching the previews for the next episode, I realized we have a NEW holiday. The announcer said "New episode on Thanksgiving Wednesday." Yes, you read correctly...THANKSGIVING WEDNESDAY. I am STILL baffled by this. I always thought Thanksgiving was just a one day holiday. And, on THURSDAY!!!! I guess not.

Cheerleader Lock-In

Well, we started a tradition about 11 years ago when I first became cheer sponsor. We had a lock-in at our old school--which was said to be haunted. (I actually saw some bizarre stuff myself.) It was an OLD school--condemned at one point but still being used. I asked a teacher friend and she and her husband and another friend came up and scared all of us...myself included. Since then, we have had a lock-in every year. And, we have tried--and succeeded-in scaring the girls. Usually we have the lock-in after the back-to-school dance...This means we have less time to entertain them. However, Hurricane Ike changed or plans for this year. We have it scheduled for this Friday. We will have about an extra 4 hours to keep them focused on anything but calling people at 3:00 in the morning. So, B and I have come up with a LOT of great ideas.

First, we are going to have a challenge in which the girls will earn points. The winner will get some kind of prize. What, we haven't determined. We are having an obstacle course in the gym, a fear factor-type contest, a photo scavenger hunt, and a physical scavenger hunt. We have also enlisted J to help scare the girls. He and his family have a haunted house every year on Halloween for the trick-or-treaters, so he is pumped!!! This will be so much fun. I can't wait.

For the fear factor contest, we will be making them eat/drink such items as day old bath water, boogers on a stick, strained eyeballs, cat poop cookies and roach guts. (None of this is really what it seems.)

We are also going to play dodgeball and some other games like that. I'll let you know how it goes after ward.

If you have any suggestions, PLEASE let me know!!!!!

Twilight

There is a new book series that is all the rage. Kind of like Harry Potter...LOVED HARRY POTTER!!! This series is by Stephenie Meyer, and the first book is Twilight. I finally broke down and bought the book. (One of my cheerleaders put her name on the waiting list in our school library--#44--and the public library--#66. I found it at the local Wal-Mart for $5.97. I bought two copies. One for me and one for her.) My paperback copy is 498 pages.

Isn't it amazing that kids who claim they hate to read are reading HUGE books?

I haven't started reading it yet, but several students have talked about it and several teachers at our school have read it or are reading it. Just like Harry Potter. And, just like Harry Potter, it is a new movie. Another cheerleader is attending the midnight viewing of the movie Thursday. I couldn't do that. (She has to be at school Friday or she can't participate in the cheerleader lock-in...see next post.)

I'll keep you posted on my reading adventure--without giving away ANY book details! (I HATE it when people give away too much--or any--information!)

Car Rentals

OMG!!!! I was looking to visit some family over the Christmas holidays. I found a flight to a SUPER TINY airport an hour from their house for around $275 plus a $15 per bag each way fee. Then, I found a flight for exactly $200 to a VERY SMALL airport 3 hours away. This is the airport I usually fly into. I figured I could rent a car as I did this summer for about $150. HELLO!?!?!?!?!? Was I mistaken!!!!! When I went to book the rental car, the CHEAPEST I could find which is a huge rip-off was $584. Almost 3 TIMES the amount of the flight. I couldn't breathe I was so startled. What was really bad was I had already booked the flight! I panicked becuase I couldn't believe what an idiot I was.

I spoke with my mom today, and she said I should still be able to cancel the ticket because it was within 24 hours. I wasn't so sure since it was one of those "internet specials". Well, I called the airline and sure enough, a WONDERFUL person on the other end worked magic and was able to delete my reservation. YEAH WONDERFUL SALES PERSON!!!!!!!!!!

But here is the other kicker about this. As I was trying to breathe, I did a few more searches for car rentals. Those were even worse! I recieved great deals for $1,024. Who in their RIGHT mind would pay that for a car rental???????? I could drive across country for less than that!!!!

Last Post

Would you believe me if I said that was one BIG joke on you? Didn't think so! My friend, whose blog you can read here, showed me how to do the strike through thing. I thought there was a typo since I was reading it at night after a long day at work. So, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, had a line through it. It did look kind of cool...and, it couldn't have happened on a better post.

Practical Jokes....

Some people like to play practical jokes on others. Some are very funny, some are goofy, and some are just plain mean-spirited. What is acceptable and what is not? Who decides? When is it all in good fun and when is it hurtful?

Our campus likes to have a lot of fun. Our motto is "Work hard. Play hard." And, WE DO! Recently, several teams of teachers have started to "punk" other teachers. Thankfully, our hall is kind of off limits. Our leader, who should be retired who doesn't like silly behavior would go off the deep end if something happened in our hall. Everyone considers us the "sticks in the mud." We aren't. We just don't have time for nonsense. Don't get me wrong, I like a good joke. However, I would be extremely ANGRY if someone did to me what they have been doing.

Example: One morning a team came to work to find all of the student desks from 4 classrooms all in one classroom. A teacher with an empty room was out and the sub walked into a room with no desks. The kids missed out on about 15 minutes of instruction because they were moving desks around. To me, that was over the line.

I am mentoring a first year teacher, who also attended our school since I've been teaching there. Don't I feel old!!!!! I had to do an observation of him. He did a GREAT job. I left a sticky note under his keyboard telling how great he did. But, I left another sticky out in the open that read "This was the worst class I've ever been in. We need to do a lot of work before T comes in. You better start praying now." He hunted me down to let me know his heart dropped to the floor over my comments--until he saw the other note.

Well, payback is hell. He got his revenge from an unlikely source. The principal who evaluated me the other day sent my observation to me. I was a TINA....Teacher In Need of Assistance. I was marked BELOW expectations in several categories and was pretty much a crummy teacher. I have never had scores this low...EVER!!! It took me about 5 pages before I saw the note "Just kidding." I was worse off than my mentee! I actually was in tears when I read the report. But, then I laughed. I'm still laughing! (I got the REAL deal back today--I did great.)

This was not over the line. Please share your favorite practical joke with the rest of us!!!!!!

Veterans Day

First, I do KNOW it is November 11th and not November 12th. Second, I do KNOW I stole this idea from T. Third, I did celebrate yesterday. Before you read my post, please read T's here.

Here is my dad. He was a U. S. Marine who served during the Korean War.

(Remember this picture....it will come up again in a little bit.)

My mom's father served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. I don't have a picture of him. He was in Okinawa on Easter Sunday.

Since yesterday was Veterans Day and my observation, I wanted to do something that tied them both together. So, I did. I posted pictures of my dad and other co-workers family members on my marker board. I had 2 sections where kids could list people they knew who were veterans. They also signed a poster board that said Thank You, Veterans on it. I had them compare and order important dates, graph information, use reasonableness skills and we watched a video I created on the war memorials in Washington, D.C. The lesson was so-so because the kids couldn't figure out how to do the simple things--such as put their desks in groups. I do think they enjoyed it though.

After school, the cheerleaders came into my room and saw all of the pictures. They noticed the one from above--remember I told you to remember it??? They were all "He is so good-looking", "He is so cute" and so on. I was like "MY DAD????" (I couldn't believe it since these girls are 13-14 years old and my dad is almost 75! Any way, I commented back "Well, I'll be sure to NOT tell him you said that." When they asked why, I replied "His head is big enough already."

I came home and called him. When I told him the conversation, he responded with "I know I'm good looking." (Didn't I tell you he had a big head?) However, when I shared with him that they also said I look like him, his response was "We are just two good-looking people." That made me smile!

I want to end this post with just a few simple words....Thank You Veterans! (Even if it is a day late, it still is true!)

blogging...

I'm back. I never really went away. I just was too tired to blog. There were nights that I didn't even turn on the computer!

Since I was last here, several major events have happened. Well, they were big events, not life-altering events. But still, they took up my time!

Friday--drove about an hour to visit a friend and her daughter (HI N and Mushroom!!!). Had dinner with another friend and picked up my repaired necklace. Finally! (See, I bought it in Las Vegas on July 8. It broke when I was in MO on August 8. I dropped it off in Houston to be fixed on September 7. Picked it up on November 7. I'm seeing a pattern here!) Got home after midnight after being up before 6 am that morning.

Saturday--up by 7:30, out of the house by 8:30, at school by 9:20. Picked up cheerleaders and traveled to Houston to perform in a half-time event at a university there. It was a great time--except when I went psycho mom on them. (They were to meet us after they were finished. None of the 13 of them heard that and left. There were thousands of drunk college kids and the school isn't in the greatest of neighborhoods. They think they are invincible.) Didn't get home until almost 1 am.

Sunday--missed the alarm because the volume had been turned down sometime on Saturday on my phone. Not a big deal. Went to school for about 2 hours and then to a wedding. It was like a reunion of sorts. One of my former cheerleaders was the bride, and the groom went to our school as well. I knew all sorts of people who attended. They were either former students or parents of former students. WOW! The bride (her mom teaches with me) was beautiful as was the entire event. Not bad for being planned in less than 3 months--with virtually no help from the bride or groom as they were both off at Marine boot camp. (He in California, and she in South Carolina...I think.) The only communication my friend had with her daughter was through snail mail. That's right. No email. No phone. No nothing!

Monday--Cheer practice in the am! Up at 4:15 and out the door before 5:30. After school, I stayed late to finish getting ready for my observation. Every year, teachers have to be formally observed to make sure they are doing what they need to be. I actually did this lesson 3 or 4 years ago. My appraiser had never seen it, so why re-invent the wheel? I still spent a lot of hours getting ready for this.

Tuesday--My observation. YEAH, IT'S OVER!!!! I don't know how I did yet....on pins and needles. That is another post. Last football game. YEAH, IT'S OVER!!!! I like the girls. I like football. I hate dealing with cheerleader parents who don't listen. Don't get me wrong, I don't really have the typical Cheerleader parents. I just have those few who think the rules shouldn't be what they are. Sorry. You knew when you paid your deposit what the rules were. Get over it!!!!!! (left at 5:45, home after 9:00)

Wednesday--Benchmark testing. (left before 6:25 home by 7:15. WHAT?!?!?!? 7:15! How did that happen?????) What a boring day. We give the benchmarks twice a year and all I can do for the entire class period (85 minutes) is stare them down. I can't read. I can't email. I can't do ANYTHING but stare at them. It is very difficult to not fall asleep. I start to go crazy. When we do Snapshot and TAKS testing, it is the same way. Except, it lasts THE ENTIRE DAY!!!!!!! I know why this is, and I know it is important, but MY SANITY becomes questioned at the end of the day.

And now, I'm going to end this post. YEAH, IT'S OVER!!!!!!

Winners and Losers

After reading the results from the recent election, I must say that Senator Joe Biden is the BIG WINNER! Bigger than Barack Obama. See, Senator Obama won one office--President of the United States. Senator Biden won TWO! That's right, TWO!!! He won the offices of Vice-President of the United States AND Senator for the state of Delaware. How will he ever decide??? HA HA HA! Oh, to be so lucky.

Then, I read our local paper. One of my former students is on trial for murder-for-hire. Supposedly, he was paid to murder a local businessman by the businessman's wife. This is very heartbreaking. Not because a former student is on trial, but because of who the former student is. I never--in a bazillion years--would have thought this particular kid would be in jail. Others, yes. I guess we never know what is going to happen to them when they leave us.

I want to end on another winner--who also could be seen as a loser. Another former student was severely injured while serving our country in Iraq back in January. For a while, they didn't know if he would make it. (This is the loser part....) He has had a very, very, very slow recovery with many setbacks. Today, I heard that he is improving and is responding to commands--something he wasn't doing before. (In fact, he was having trouble breathing on his own.) I'm very excited about the progress he is making...We'll all keep the prayers coming!!! (And I'll be honoring him with my lesson on Tuesday.)

Proposition 8 in California

California voters are voting on Proposition 8--otherwise known as the ban on gay marriage. This struck me as kind of strange based on a VERY early memory of California.

Back in the 1970's, I traveled to California with my mom, dad, grandmother and grandfather (dad's parents) to visit my aunt (dad's sister). While we were there, our airline thought we deserved an extended vacation--they went on strike and stranded us for a few extra days. (Gotta learn how to do that strike through stuff!!!!) When we were finally able to leave, we had to travel from Northern CA to Los Angeles, spend the night and fly home the next day.

While we were in LA, we left the hotel for dinner and started walking around the block looking for a suitable place to eat. My grandfather--who was VERY OLD SCHOOL!!!!--vetoed every place because there were same-sex couples. I distinctly remember the words he used to describe these couples (I can even hear his voice, and he hasn't been with us since 1988.) Was what he said appropriate? No. Was it nice? NO! However, it was kind of acceptable AT THAT TIME. It would NEVER be acceptable in 2008, even though people still say those words.

I believe our country has become more tolerant to the differences that make us up. I have a niece who is a lesbian. After she told the family, did that mean we loved her any less? No. Did it mean we loved her differently? No. It is her life. She may live it any way she chooses. Since I can find happiness with the man of my dreams, why can't she find happiness with the woman of hers? Because she loves someone of the same gender, does that mean she can't be happy? And, who am I to decide this????

And really, do we NEED a constitutional amendment???? Let's work on finding jobs for the unemployed, food for the needy, shelter for the homeless and medical help for those in need--physically and mentally.

It's Over!!!!

It's Over. Election '08. YEAH!!!! What a LONG election season it has been. What has traditionally started in January of the election year started almost 2 full years ahead of the big day.

I voted. Did you?

I'm happy. Are you?

No matter when you voted, no matter who you voted for--it's over. Now, we need to turn to the future. We have to remember that even if we were not in favor of Senator Barack Obama being our president, WE MUST RESPECT HIM. He is THE President of the United States. He is THE one in the White House. He WILL be making decisions. WE MUST RESPECT HIM.

I say this because I think that lack of respect is a NATIONAL DISEASE. Everyone--and, I mean EVERYONE--has been bashing our current commander-in-chief. There are many ways to show our displeasure with the man (and maybe someday the woman) who is in charge of our country--spoof, satire, etc. However, the American public has crossed the line and have attacked and lost all respect for George W. Bush. (He isn't even out of office yet, and we already have a controversial movie about him in theaters!!!!) Until we teach our children and fellow Americans how to respect our President, our country will not get better. Our civilization depends on this!

Election Day Countdown...

I'm still new at this blogging stuff--and adding gadgets, well, that is just beyond my normal brain function. So, my election day countdown counter is wrong. But, you still get the point. VOTE. Don't vote often--that will get you some jail time. However, make your vote count. Make your voice be heard. Stand up for yourself. Use one of the greatest rights you have.

No matter what happens on Tuesday, November 4, 2008, history will be made. You will be a part of it. Celebrate our wonderful country!

Be proud to be an American! I am!

Right Now...

Back in college, I was a night assistant in the dorms. What a great job!!! I worked from midnight to 5 am one day a week and one Friday/Saturday every other weekend. During finals I would work more often. This actually helped my GPA. Afterall, what is there to do from midnight to 5 am but study? Well, I would watch TV. I would watch MTV and Nick-at-Nite.

One video I enjoyed watching was Right Now by Van Halen. You couldn't just vege in front of the tv, you had to READ the video. I thought about that song and video this morning and looked it up on YouTube. I found it!!! YEAH! As I was reading the phrases something bizarre struck me. This song was written in 1991. The video was filmed around the same time. However, everything that was written is still the same in 2008--17 or so years later. This is very sad.

Control Issues

Earlier this week I had someone tell me I had control issues. It was said in a joking manner and the person barely knows me. Wait--he really doesn't know me. (And, he made fun of my Cubs hat!!!!) Anyway, it got me to thinking...Do I have control issues???? Or, do I just want things done correctly?

For example, for our open house later this week, I am putting together a powerpoint. I could let other teachers on my team do this, but I want it to look a certain way--and if they did it, it would be plain looking. When we host the pep rally each year, I take on several big jobs. One job is creating the certificates. I could let another teacher do this, but they would hand-write the names and it would look sloppy.

Two years ago, J and I decided to have a sports banquet at our school. We went to the principals, and they loved the idea. The idea came from the fact that the male coaches didn't get their act together the previous year to hand out certificates to those kids who had participated in sports. That left us answering the question "Where is my son's certificate?" at the award ceremony. How do you tell a parent, or student, "Well, your unorganized coach didn't do it." The first year was a disaster in the male coaches again messed it up. They didn't have a list of names so they just wrote who they thought. They didn't want to miss a kid, so they called "All the football players" to the floor of the gym. They proceeded to take them to the side and pass out the certificates. If they forgot a kid, they wrote a certificate out right there. UGH! This past year, the male coaches again rose to the occasion! They had a ton of warning, but weren't too bright. One coach caused a lot of problems because he didn't know what was going on. HELLO!?!?!?!? I spelled it out for him. I even volunteered to do the certificates for him!!!! Did he take me up on the offer???? NO!!!! Instead, he verged on breaking some very official rules governing sports. This current year is to be different. Our principal said she was going to be in charge--partly after J and I said we were NEVER doing it again. We'll see. I know I will give in and do something--afterall, I'm already thinking about it! I do this not for me, but for the kids. They work hard and deserve to be rewarded--even if it is just a piece of paper.

I am the leader of a cadre (committee to most of you) that is in charge of several different events on our campus. One is Red Ribbon Week. Whenever I try to delegate responsibilities--so I'm not solely in control--no one follows through. Therefore, I look bad. I don't like looking bad. So, I don't delegate.

So, my question is this--Do I have control issues or am I just a perfectionist? Or, am I just unbalanced????
