First, I do KNOW it is November 11th and not November 12th. Second, I do KNOW I stole this idea from T. Third, I did celebrate yesterday. Before you read my post, please read T's here.
Here is my dad. He was a U. S. Marine who served during the Korean War.
(Remember this picture....it will come up again in a little bit.)
My mom's father served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. I don't have a picture of him. He was in Okinawa on Easter Sunday.
Since yesterday was Veterans Day and my observation, I wanted to do something that tied them both together. So, I did. I posted pictures of my dad and other co-workers family members on my marker board. I had 2 sections where kids could list people they knew who were veterans. They also signed a poster board that said Thank You, Veterans on it. I had them compare and order important dates, graph information, use reasonableness skills and we watched a video I created on the war memorials in Washington, D.C. The lesson was so-so because the kids couldn't figure out how to do the simple things--such as put their desks in groups. I do think they enjoyed it though.
After school, the cheerleaders came into my room and saw all of the pictures. They noticed the one from above--remember I told you to remember it??? They were all "He is so good-looking", "He is so cute" and so on. I was like "MY DAD????" (I couldn't believe it since these girls are 13-14 years old and my dad is almost 75! Any way, I commented back "Well, I'll be sure to NOT tell him you said that." When they asked why, I replied "His head is big enough already."
I came home and called him. When I told him the conversation, he responded with "I know I'm good looking." (Didn't I tell you he had a big head?) However, when I shared with him that they also said I look like him, his response was "We are just two good-looking people." That made me smile!
I want to end this post with just a few simple words....Thank You Veterans! (Even if it is a day late, it still is true!)
