This weekend, I was catching up on some TV I missed during the week. I was watching the wedding of Izzie and Alex on Grey's Anatomy--through tears, I might add--and began thinking about the traditional wedding vows. You know the ones....
I, (name), take you (name), to be my (wife/husband), to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.
What struck me though was that these are the exact same qualities we look for in a true friend. Someone who will be there for us in the good times and the bad. When we are rich or when we are struggling. When we are ill or when we are healthy. We have a special love--though very different than the love between those getting married. And we cherish our friends always.
But friends don't need a public ceremony or a big party to declare this to one another. We just show each other through our actions.
To those of you who are my true friends--and you know who you are--I hope you know that from this day forward, I am there for you for better or worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, in good times and bad and I cherish our friendships until the end.
For all of you who read this--may you have a friend in your life like the ones I have in mine.
