Newspaper...
I was reading our local newspaper online and decided to click on the obituaries. I don't particularly enjoy reading this page, but do so in case I know someone. The majority of the time I see a current or former student's name listed under survived by. Knowing this helps me be prepared for my students.
Tonight, there was a listing that was both very sad and very disturbing. It also made me question myself. The obituary was for----ummmm, not sure how to word this.......ummmm......hmmmm.....well, a 17-week-old fetus. The wording said "...passed away 17 weeks after conception." I truly feel bad for this family. To lose a child at anytime is difficult. However, I find it disturbing the way it is written. I started questioning the whole process--and the universal argument about when life begins.
**If life begins at conception, why are obituaries like this not published more often?
**When do you write an obituary? Is there a magic number of weeks where it becomes acceptable?
**Has modern technology changed the way people feel?? Since people are no longer being surprised with the birth-and naming the child before a single breath has been taken-is this making the fetus "more human?" (I apologize for my lack of vocabulary.)
Any and all thoughts, comments, and prayers welcome.

Thoughts....
1. Should Dante Stallworth receive a lighter sentence from Roger Goodall than Michael Vick?? A letter to Spirts Illustrated asked--since when is a dog's life more important than a human's?? Michael Vick served over 6 months in a federal prison for dog fighting. Dante Stallworth was sentenced to 30 days for killing a pedestrian while he was under the influence of both alcohol and drugs. Both crimes are wrong, but are these punishments fair??
2. Do you root for an athlete or do you root for a uniform?? Growing up, everyone voted for a team. These days of free agency and trades have caused kids to follow athletes regardless of the uniform they are wearing. I will always root for the uniform!!
3. Should Bobby Bowden be punished for academic cheating that he was unaware of?? I'm not a big Bowden fan, but that is like punishing your dog for a cat pooping in your yard!! Now if he cheated in a game or helped his players cheat--yeah, punish him.
4. When will the Cubs win a world championship?? Bob Ryan said it won't be this year. Who knows. Who cares?? I'm a fan--win or lose. Would I love to see the curse gone? Absolutely. Will my life change if it never happens?? Nope!! My happiness is not based on what grown men do on a baseball field. But, I'm not giving up hope!! Go Cubs!!
Marathon Match
Congratulations Roger Federer!!
Andy Roddick deserves accolades as well. This match was history making in so many ways. He should be very proud.
Retirement
In my opinion, once you retire, stay that way!!
